The second half of 2020 proved particularly tough for cybersecurity teams everywhere, with wave after wave of cyberattacks hitting organisations from all directions.
This is according to a new report from cybersecurity firm McAfee, which states that an average organization received 588 threats a minute in Q3 2020, up 40 percent on the previous quarter. The final quarter of the year was even worse, reaching 648 threats per minute, up an additional 10 percent on Q3.
As Donoff malware became more prevelant, Powershell threats surged. In the final three months of 2020, the volume of these threats rose by 208 percent compared to the previous quarter.
Mobile malware also rose 118 percent, in large part due to strains such as HiddenAds, Clicker, MoqHao, HiddenApp, Dropper and FakeApp. A 69 percent growth in ransomware incidences, meanwhile, was driven by Cryptodefense, REvil, Thanos, Ryuk, RansomeXX and Maze.
IT teams also frequently found themselves in uncharted waters, McAfee says, as incidents related to new malware strains jumped by 100 percent. And cloud is also growing in importance among criminals, as suggested by the 3.1 million external attacks on cloud user accounts.
McAfee claims that criminals are indiscriminate in terms of industry, with financial services, healthcare, public sector, education and many others sectors targeted.
