First announced in January as Project Spartan, Microsoft’s new browser is based on an all-new rendering engine that has been developed to deliver an optimal experience for the modern web, and also includes better support for touch gestures and ink input.

Announcing the official Microsoft Edge name at the Build Developer conference, Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president of the Operating Systems Group, explained that it is because the new browser is “on the edge of consuming and creating, it’s about being closest to the modern capabilities of the web – note-taking, reading and consuming content, and it has Cortana built-in so helps you to get things done”.
